Phantom Winter is a five piece band from Würzburg, Germany. This band rose from the ashes of Omega Massif. Last year they released their first album ”Cvlt”. We have already spoken about Cvlt here. In my opinion it is a great album. Exceeding your first album though
can be will always be a rather hard task. ”Sundown Pleasures” , which was released this september, is the band’s second ful length album.
”Sundown Pleasures” includes six tracks. The band’s music is an exciting blend of sludge, post metal and black metal. Or you could call it black metal with huge loads of ambience. I’m not so sure about it. One thing i know is that the new album starts with the most emphatic way. Enter ”Sundown Pleasures”. It’s probably this album’s best track. It is also my favorite one. ”The Darkest Clan” is a different story. Here the band flirts a bit with dark wave. No, don’t expect a Bauhaus track or something like that. Dark here goes perhaps for this mesmerizing track that’s compeling you to listen to it. ”Bombing the Witches” is another excellent track. It is also one of the tracks i focused the most simply because i liked it so much. ”Wraith War” is more of a sludge track. It’s heavy as hell of course. ”Black Hole Scum” is an ambient/ noise step before the album’s outro. Black Hole Sun never came and will never come. Last but not least we find ”Black Space”. This track unfolded greatly in front of me and left me in awe. Hands down, this is another great track.
So the question is, what do i think about this album? I think the band definitely delivered. To me ”Sundown Pleasures” is not a better album than Cvlt. Or maybe it is, i don’t know. Certainly though they didn’t lower their standards at all. Check out this link and find out for yourselves.
