Interview with Zayn

Please introduce your band.

Zayn is a four piece instrumental band from Croatia, created 2011. on ruins of our previous projects. It is our creative outlet and departure from confined and narrow environment in which we live. We create music that doesn’t leave you indifferent. We speak the truth without words.

Can you tell us about your main influences?

We as a band are always pushing to develop ourselves so our influences come from a variety of genres (progressive, black, kraut, jazz, pop, etc.) and bands (for example: Swans, Wiegedood, Sigur Rós, Miles Davis, Sunn O))), Liturgy, Sumac, Intronaut, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, etc.). We have an opportunity to check out different music from around the world and it would be stupid to limit ourselves. Some of it will be shit but you can always find some music that suits you and can inspire you.

Why did you decide to form an instrumental band?

Mostly because not to have barriers and to just enjoy music as it is. From the start we realized that we wanted to give ourselves and the listener a way to immerse her/himself more into melodies and riffs. The idea is to transfer the listener into our instrumental cosmos. Too often you’ll find some band that sounds great but then lyrics ruin that magic moment (generic themes, quasi-socially engaged populist slogans, etc…).

Given that you are an instrumental band, what made you give your songs  the song titles you did?

We are always going for some kind of a concept when making an album. The names of the songs correspond with the main theme. For example our first Ep was based on ancient greek play “Medeia” by Euripides. Music from this album was also used in a theatre play of the same name which was directed by our guitarist M.Dragičević. It has 5 songs that correspond to five acts from the play and titles were given according to our interpretation of these acts. Our second Ep “Café Mably” is a live album inspired by Jean Paul Sartre’s “La Nausee” and we titled the songs so they represent our view on the book. Regarding our latest album “Fields of God” we did our own concept. Answer to the next question will give you a better view on it.

Any particular concept behind ‘’Fields of God’’ you would like to discuss?

The album is our instrumental voyage through world’s everlasting intellectual collapse. It consists of 9 songs where 1st and 9th are more drone oriented and serve as ironical reflections on too simplified teachings of world’s faiths about our universe.

The fool says in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good.

The Lord is in his holy temple;
theLord is on his heavenly throne.
He observes everyone on earth;
his eyes examine them.

The other 7 songs are pieces of our contemplation on here/now and everyone is free to draw their own conclusions from song titles.

Many people like talking about genres. How would you classify your band? Post metal, sludge or progressive perhaps?

For people that like to talk about genres you could say we’re instrumental post-metal that incorporate noise and progressive elements. The real goal is to reach listeners who will appreciate our music/concepts regardless the genre/boxes we often like to put things.

What inspires you the most?

In general our inspiration comes from negative and positive things that we’re exposed to daily. For example a good book or movie (we recently watched Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Mirror”, a unique experience) that gets you to contemplate, good and bad events in our lives, media stupidity, world’s intellectual collapse, neverending cycle of violence, life and all it’s meaningless parody that surrounds us.

What are you listening to these days? Any bands you would like to recommend?

Mgla, Kaada, Oranssi Pazuzu, Ho99o9, Liturgy, The Black Heart Rebellion.

Any live shows planned for Croatia or abroad?

We have a european tour in May and expecting another tour to be confirmed in July. Nothing is planned for Croatia this year. Our current occupation is primarily to play outside our borders because we believe there are more opportunities for new people to hear us and potentially appreciate our music. For those who wish to follow news regarding the tour/listen our music you can check our webpage

What does the future hold for Zayn?

Future holds more work and development for Zayn. We’re currently working on new songs, some are finished and will be played on tour. The plan is to record and finish new album this year and promote it the next. There is also some music we’ll be doing for our local theatre. Besides that we’re looking for a suitable label which would support us in physical edition and distribution of “Fields of God”.
